Timber sash windows - spiral balanced or traditional weights and pulleys?

We've made the decision to replace the existing 1970's slat/louvre windows in our Victorian house with the traditional sash windows that they used to have.
We've had people round to quote, and some companies provide spiral balanced sashes, whereas others do the traditional weights and pulleys.
It seems the traditional method does cost a little more, but I was just wondering what people's experiences/knowledge of either of the two?
Thanks

Personally I prefer weights and cords, they will last longer and look far better. Spiral balances look terrible with a 16-18mm white or brown tube visible within the pulley stile. In my experience they also corrode after a few years, especially the brackets that secure the balance to the sash.
If the windows are going to be double glazed you will more than likely need lead weights due to increased weight of the glass. The downside is lead is expensive.0 -

My sons work is installing sash windows or repairing them and i just asked him and he said to ask for lead weights.I only just asked him and i cant remember the reason why he said lead now.But straight away he said have lead ,it wasnt for the look it was because they are better.0

There is less work in making sash windows with spiral balances so they would be cheaper but thats the only plus point with SB over weights and cords.0
