Working for Job Centre

  • I have worked in the Civil Service for 21 years and spent time in three different Departments, including JC+, working at levels from AO to HEO

All have their good points, all have their bad points.

At the end of the day, you get out of a Job exactly what you put in.

Some people turn up each day and are there because the job suits them (as opposed to them suiting the job).

Some turn up every day as they actually enjoy their job and try to do their best .

The Civil Service is a political football and will always be. Even with the changes in service delivery over the next few years, there is ongoing recruitment. Staff do leave and recruitment seems to be common in the larger cities.

I guess at the end of the day everyone has their own opinion. The above is mine.

I agree with UKDickie, I've worked for Jobcentreplus and its predecessors for over 16yrs, its had its moments but the good thing about the civil service is you can change to other jobs and still by employed by the same employer, it certainly not a job for life anymore but if you work hard you can still get on, be promoted etc, I worked in a Jobcentre for 7yrs although I don't have any recent experience of working in a customer facing role but I love my job to bits at the moment and give it my all.

I'm not doubting that we all know of people that have bad service in a Jobcentre, I've met some shockers in my time but what place can't you say that of, its about individuals.

  • The only chance most people have nowadays of employment, outside london, within DWP/JCP is in a Benefit Delivery Centre, Debt Centre or Contact Centre. Fine if you you like the entirely target driven production line environment that operates in these centres.......
  • Very true, I've recently left one government dept and started work with the DWP. The targets are a nightmare. Although to be fair to a lot of the staff, they'd rather give a good service than meet the targets. Shame management don't share the same thoughts!!
  • Targets over customer service, the jobs are usually in the local paper as well as the Jobcentre plus website. Sometimes if they need a casual in a hurry they will ask the advisers to 'match' the vacancy to suitable people who are signing on. You could be signing on one minute and getting a phone call the next, wonder if anyone has ever had the nerve to turn the job down and get their benefits reduced for not taking a job.

Look on the jobcentreplus website - they're listed there too. http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/jobs - you can do this from home rather than look in the jobcentre itself.

Their jobs are not well paid to be honest with you but you do have some sort of security I guess.
