Hi Guys
I would really appreciate a bit of advice

i moved into my house nearly 2 years ago after my split with hubbie. the house already had gas and electric cards so i called BG to see about getting switched on, they said that i would have to keep the cards for a while. Its now nearly 18 month later and im just getting around to sorting my finances out properly :o

i was going to call BG and see if i can get these chaged to normal meters which is what i have always had in other houses as i think they may work out cheaper?
i dont mind the card meters as i can budget and i always ensure there is pleanty of credit but like i said i think i can save using a normal meter and monthly DD.

any advice what tarrif i should ask for as my ex used to do all this and im not the best at this sort of thing (but am getting better thanks to MSE)

Thanks a Million lisa

Can you change from PAYGO meters to Credit meters?

The answer is Yes, but BG will charge for changeing the meters and run a personal credit check, which if not quite squeaky clean could result in a demand for a cash deposit.

BG are rarely the lowest cost supplier, so well worth running your consumption figures thro' the Switch sites to search for a cheaper deal.

BG don't charge for changing the meter - they do on occasion ask for a deposit - which is refunded after a year.

You're right that having a credit meter and paying by monthly direct debit is generally the cheapest way to pay for your energy. For instance in London we found that the lowest Monthly DD tariff was £227 cheaper over 12 months than the lowest priced prepayment tariff.

Hi you definitely can change from prepay to credit meters with British Gas and they do not charge you to change, though you have to pass a credit check. If you don't pass it don't worry. Speak to the customer complaints department they are passed in Scotland- they can see how much you add to the meter each month obviously you can afford this amount.

You will save if you go for a direct debit- you get access to cheaper tariff too. I'm assuming you have a nectar card linked to your BG account? You get extra points too for each monthly reading. They also provide free electricity monitors to customers so you can see how much things use.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
