The perfect off-white...

We have finally made it to the fun decorating part of doing our Victorian terrace up, except it's not very fun as I hate making decisions (I've made enough in the last 8 months to last a lifetime). We are looking for one neutral colour to paint the whole house in, then adding bits of colour in each room.

Looking for a warm but not too yellow off white. Our house doesn't get a huge amount of natural light. I've so far spent a small fortune on testers...

The ones we have ruled out so far are:

Natural Calico - Dulux
Natural Hessian - Dulux
Almond White - Dulux
Nutmeg White - Dulux
Jasmine White - Dulux
White Cotton - Dulux
Milk White - Crown
Snowdrop - Crown
Clunch - F&B

We have just painted our bathroom in White Mist (Dulux) which is the perfect amount of 'off-whiteness' but it would be too cold of a colour for the rest of the house. We also quite like Timeless (Dulux) except I'm worried that in big quantities it will look a bit like magnolia.

I'm going to go and get a tester of Sail White (Crown) and Wevet (F&B) but I'm hoping someone else has had the same dilemma and found THE colour! :o

  • Well we did our whole house in Almond White so I can't really help you there. But I am curious what put you off about it as a colour?

Cotton White by Laura Ashley? It's not yellowy but not quite brilliant white either.
You had me at your proper use of "you're".

    Hi Curiosity,

It was a lovely colour and I was recommended it by my parents who have it in their lounge, but it's too dark in our house (which sounds crazy for a paint with white in it's name!)

We slathered gallons of Antique White around & it's worked a charm for us. Not full fat creamy, but not arctic whisper of blue either.

    Keep on having fun!

I recently painted 2 bedrooms in nutmeg white, and am not that keen on the finished effect, too much colour, and a bit "feminine", for want of a better description...I wanted a very pale brown colour.

The next 2 rooms I did, I used Dulux's white chiffon, much happier with that. Really nice off white colour, no yellowy tinge at all. From the paint brochure I'd say it's like timeless, but warmer.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Choosing off whites is incredibly difficult. It took us ages to choose one for our windows ( we went with a sikkens matched to f and b shaded white)

I quite like clock face ( little greene) but its cold and greyish and I'm not sure it will work where I want it.

But I love little greenes pearl colours ( a few shades of this). I'm not a white paint person but will probably paint our bathroom in this as well as consider it for woodwork in some rooms.

Know what you mean about Nutmeg White. Saw a photo on Pinterest and thought it looked perfect. Painted it on the wall and it's much darker and definitely got a bit of pink to it!

Thanks for the White Chiffon tip, I'll add it to the tester list!
