A really sensible idea when it says in huge letters on the control box: "Warning: removal of this cover exposes live parts". It needs to be disconnected by someone who knows what they are doing, unless the homeowner wants to run the risk of electrocution.0 -

or he could.....take a small screwdriver and undo the single screw holding the fuse in the fused spur adjacent to the control panel and remove it, undo the single screw holding the front cover and disconnect the battery. Most domestic systems fitted by ADT lately are fitted by 'dealerships'. Small companies or one-man bands who install as cheap as possible and ADT then look after and monitor them. The outside sounder isn't, it's just a decoy. There will be an internal sounder which creates the local 'noise'
No need to get all fidgety about possible electric shocks. Once the mains fuse is removed, which is safe to do, the panel is all 12v.0 -

No such thing adjacent to my box - I've just checked. And my external bell isn't a "decoy", it is ear-splitting when activated. The system was installed when the house was built 13 years ago.0
