Surprise £1k bill from EON
Options
We got a surprise electricity bill for nearly £1k.
This arises because every time we tried to give a meter reading, they didn't believe us, and insisted instead on using estimated readings, so we paid around £50 a month. After 2 years, they have come round and taken a meter reading and thus given us this huge extra bill.
Is there anything we can do to contest this? I realise that electricity is not free, but it seems a little unfair! If we had realised it was so expensive, we would have changed supplier for sure (or at least tried to figure out where the consumption was going!). It is a small top floor flat, we rarely switch the (electric) heating on, we don't have a lot of electric equipment and in fact we are not in the flat much at all.
I have read the code of conduct and it seems that it might hinge on being able to prove that they refused our reading 5 times or more? Then we might be able to get the bill written off for at least the amounts which are >1 years old?

Hiya noisla,
You're correct in thinking this may fall under the back billing code of practice. I can't say for sure on here though as I don't have all the details and can't see the account.
The best thing to do is to contact us and ask for the account to be looked in to properly, raise a complaint and ask why your reads weren't used for so long.
We may also be able to offer an extended amount of time to pay the balance that is owing, this again is something to ask.
Hope this helps a little.
