Figuring out funds...

Hi, I'm pretty new to all this, so apologies if this is a stupid question or someone has asked something similar before!

I have a small amount of money invested in JPM Asia Fund. On my last statement the brought forward value as at 04/04/2006 was £979 and the current value as at 03/04/2007 was £1108: an increase of £129 or a little over 13%. Fair enough, but when I look at the performance of the fund on https://www.trustnet.com, it says it's increased by 49.5% over the last year. I realise that the time periods aren't identical but this doesn't seem to account for such a big difference, so I was wondering if I was missing something.

The only JP Morgan Asia Fund I could find (admittedly with little research) had grown by 25.8% in 12 months back in May, which is much closer to your figures.

Still doesn't seem quite right though, but looking at the charts, there seems to have been a bit of a fall in the fund's value between March/April and May of 2006 which would not be included in any growth shown in a May to May figure. As such, your fund in April may have had 5-10% higher value than a month later.

Looking at the graph I found, the fund would have grown from somewhere in the region of £1500 to £1750 in the year you're looking at (based on an initial investment of £1000 in May 2002), which represents a 17% growth, which again is a much closer fit to your actual growth.

I hope this helps a bit, for reference this was the fund I looked at, which I believe was the one you were referring to. If it wasn't, disregard all these comments!

There was a correction last April/May that hit the region for about 15%. It was recovered by October but if you invested the wrong side of that correction you would have seen a significant difference.

  • Aegis - Thanks but I think it might be a different fund. On Citywire it seems to be called JPM Asia A Acc.

Dunstonh - Thanks also. I spotted the dip on the graph. I've had the investment for years so it would have been affected by that but it still didn't seem to account for the difference between 13% and 49%. Maybe that plus the timing difference.

Ok, the full name helps me see where the difference comes froma little more clearly.

If you look at the chart there, you'll see that in April 06 the fund is at the £1750 level, and in April 07 it's got to the £2000 level more or less. the increase between those two points is therefore 14.3%, which is pretty much spot on what you said it had grown by.

Hopefully that's now got it for you!
