Holiday insurance question.

A couple we know, were due to start a weeks holiday by coach today (East Midlands then overnight stay in Lake District then on to Dunoon). However about mid-day on Saturday, he began diarrhea and on it went. Yesterday, the Tour Company rang them to say "you're coming on a tour with us tomorrow" and my friends had to say that, it would be difficult to travel, not only for themselves, but the risk to all other passengers. The company accepted it was the right thing to withdraw.
Today "he" was easier, and would have risked the journey if it had been a short one stop journey.
Today they contacted the Insurance company they had covered with (via Nationwide) and they were told they'd need a medical note from GP.
They then rang their GP practice and was told, the patient should have been seen when he was unwell and because he is easier today, the certificate couldn't be issued/backdated. Clearly with GP closed they wouldn't have been able to make contact.
This has to be a learning curve. Meanwhile, can anyone offer a suggestion as to any chance of recovering any money.

I think they will be struggling with the insurance. You generally need a medical practitioners confirmation that you are not fit to travel. Being 'difficult' isn't usually enough.
Could they not make their own way there tomorrow?
Will the tour company offer them anything - altered dates or credit towards another holiday?0
