Wanting advice re cancellation insurance please

Options
Hi,

My mum is having surgery soon and I have booked a 3 night stay at a local hotel. The first night will be for us both, then obviously just me for the other 2.
Does anyone know what kind of insurance I can get if the op is cancelled - as has happened before?
When I look online and put in her medical conditions, the policy is about the same amount as the hotel charge, so I wondered if there was any alternative?
Many thanks,

There isnt standard cover for the purpose of the trip disappearing - its too prone to miss use

Wouldnt it be easier/cheaper to simply book a flexible hotel room? Certainly some allow cancellation up to 4pm of the day of arrival to cancel.
