fixing washing line to brick wall

OK, simple job but don't want to mess it up. What kind of fixing and into the actual brick or the mortar?

Simplest way is drill a hole, insert a rawl-plug, screw in a decent-sized hook or eye to attach the line to. If you go for a hook, it's simple to tie a loop in the end of the line, hook it on, and simple to take the line down temporarily if you want to for any reason, e.g. kids playing in the garden or whatever. Alternatively ( and this is my personal favourite way ), attach a pulley, then a cleat lower down to tie off to - allows you to lower the line for ease of pegging, then raise it up to lift the clothes up out of the way. Hooks, eyes and pulleys available for a few pence from any DIY shed.

Either way, definitely screw into the brick, not the mortar. You'll be surprised how much weight there is on a line - the weight of the clothes plus the tension of the line puts a fair strain on the fixings.

I just use a large hook, drill into the wall and screw the hook in. I then tighten the hook up a little with the help of a spanner or screwdriver.

Thanks but I've decided to go for cellotape instead

Blue tack is far easier than sellotape

what you need is an 8mm expanding eye bolt

drill an 8mm hole into the centre of a brick push the eye bolt in tighten the nut and hang your washing line

an 8mm expanding eye bolt can be bought on a well known auction site for £2.50 delivered

I went for a simple cleat. It's held on with two screws. As noted above, drill into the brick and use Rawlplugs.

If in doubt, get the right size screws to match the fixing you use. Then get the right size Rawlplugs to match the screws. Then get the right size masonry drill to match the Rawlplugs.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
