Credit Card - student, grad job in November

Hi there,

I've just finished my degree and have secured a grad job starting in November. This has a salary of 28.5K.

In september I'll also be receiving through inheritance about £35,000.

My issue is that between now and then, I don't have a lot of money to pay rent, bills, food etc. Would a credit card be a good idea? Ideally there would be no interest of fees for 6 months, as I can pay it off straight away when the inheritance comes through.

I have tried to apply for part time work but no one seems interested as I am away for 3 weeks in august and have a grad job in november.

Thanks in advance

You will probably struggle to get a credit card when you are not working (even with a job offer).
Getting a 0% card is even less likely in your situation.

Some banks offer graduate loans and that might possibly be an option with a confirmed job offer (although some banks seem to have withdrawn graduate loans) But with it being over 4months until you start your job you may not fit the criteria. These will have interest charged on them though.
Do you have a student overdraft currently? might be worth talking to your own bank about graduate accounts and loans initially.

If you are able to find some temporary or part time work now you don't necessarily need to tell the employer you will not be able to work through most of August. You could simply hand in your notice a week before you are away.

As per Tixie's last paragraph, no need to tell an employer your future plans, just find any work you can to fund your lifestyle for the time being.

Using a CC to run up debt whilst awaiting an inheritance or a job in the future is a dangerous ploy. Never rely on an inheritance until the money is sitting in your account, same with a promised job, a lot can happen between now and November.

Natwest do a graduate loan if you have proof you are starting work within the year, I remember my sister in law got one when she first finished uni to tide her over till starting work.
