Can you successfully train a 1 year old dog?

of course not! the phrase 'you cant teach an old dog new tricks' is utter rubbish! both my dogs learned new tricks up until they passed over. your dog is only a year old - a child in human terms and certainly 'trainable'.
you may want to take classes - but at home appealing to their greedy side works.
for sit, I would take the treat, waft it under their nose and stand close and hold the treat above their heads.........if they don't sit then, move closer and closer. or even push down on the haunches until they sit and immediately give the treat. repeat until they sit on their own on sight of your upraised hand. and you SAY 'SIT', in a firm voice repeatedly until you get the result.0 -
Another one on YouTube that I like is Zak George. He only uses positive training and has lots of videos
And yes, you can teach any dog at any age. It just takes patience and quite possibly lots of treats0 -
My old boy was learning new tricks at what? 14 years of age.
My beautiful new boy is 2+ and I have now had him 4 weeks. We are still at the house training stage but he is very bright. He almost knows "Sit" High grade treats and a soppy voice work wonders. Top treats are: sausage, cheese, liver cake, fish biscuits.
I got my first trailhound when she was 2+, wasn't house trained (they live in kennels) she went on to be the first of her breed to get KC Good Citizen Gold (in 14 months.) She then went on to be a PAT dog & and Blue Cross education dog.
One of my trainers says that the owner has to be more awkward & persistent than the dog!!
Of course it's not too late to train your dog (would have been easier when a puppy 'though!) Mine are all rescue so that doesn't apply.
Make training fun and rewarding and keep it short. 6 ten minute sessions spread over the week are heaps better than one hour all at once. If your dog has a favourite toy you could save that for training- tugger, special ball etc... the reward does not have to be food but my hounds are foodies!!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Definitely agree with all the above. I often look after Betty, a friend's dog, whilst her owner is away. Betty is a Giant Schnauzer (more of a small bear than a large dog) and was quite out of control. She's by NO means perfect, but much better (helped by my PJR, Gisèle), and enjoys learning and mastering new things. She's at least 8 and definitely not the sharpest stick in the woodpile; so if she can learn, I'm sure your Rottie can.
Very best of luck. Have fun with your new furry friend!0
