Egg Card - Sale of Card Repayment Protection (CRP) 2001

Hi folks
I have no paperwork relating back to the original agreement so completed & sent off to Egg the PPI questionnaire as I was sure I had CRP on this old account which I no longer have, the cover was inappropriate to me as I had alternative means to make contractual payments (my employer pays up to 12 months sick pay).
They have replied with a final response letter rejecting my claim advising a full review has been undertaken & I purchased the insurance through the Egg website in 2001, as the sale was completed on a non-advised basis, they would have made no enquiries into my work benefits & were under no obligation to do so. It was my responsibility to decide if CRP was appropriate and there was a 30 day cooling off period.
Do you think there's any point in writing to the Ombudsman and if so what would I say?
Appreciate some advice....

you have failed to give us a reason for what they have done wrong.
you complained they mis-sold it but actually, they never sold it to you. you bought it. So, your employer benefits are irrelevant.
The FOS is there if you feel the response you have got from the firm is wrong. However, their response seems accurate for the position they have given. So, unless you feel that you didnt buy it online and that is a mistake or it was a bad application form then you dont appear to have much in the way of a complaint.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Egg were known for using the bad practise of pre-ticking the PPI option box on their web site application, so this maybe a reason you could try complaining about for a refund. Its not a strong case, but I believe some have been successful with this approach (if anyone has been successful then it would be good for a confirmation).
If you go down the ombudsman route then they will conduct a full investigation of your complaint, including any reasons that you may not have "noticed" or advised them of. You will have to decide whether it is worth your time filling out the form and lodging a complaint, but its no more onerous than what you have already done.
Be aware though that the ombudsman has a pretty big backlog of cases at the moment, so it will not be a speedy process, but the lender/PPI seller is given the opportunity to settle straight away without going through the full investigation.0 -
The Op cannot simply continue making complaint after complaint. The Bank have sent their "full and final" response and any further correspondence will just result in a reiteration of the original rejection. It would be different if the OP had evidence that there was a pre-ticked box-but this will have already been checked as part of the Bank's investigation of the original complaint.Egg were known for using the bad practise of pre-ticking the PPI option box on their web site application, so this maybe a reason you could try complaining about for a refund.
The OP has no option now but to refer to the Ombudsman.
Indeed, just as the Bank should already have done.Aircreate79 wrote: »If you go down the ombudsman route then they will conduct a full investigation of your complaint, including any reasons that you may not have "noticed" or advised them of.
It will take approximately eighteen months.Aircreate79 wrote: »Be aware though that the ombudsman has a pretty big backlog of cases at the moment, so it will not be a speedy process,
This avenue is not often taken advantage of by the Bank unless the amount in question is less than the FOS fee.Aircreate79 wrote: »but the lender/PPI seller is given the opportunity to settle straight away without going through the full investigation.0 -
Thanks for the replies so far, it's a completely new field for me I'm really not that good at complaining.
I honestly don't believe I would have knowingly chosen to add CRP to my account so it's possible a box was pre-filled but as you know I've got nothing to prove it. Is it enough to just say that?
I don't mind filling in the forms to the ombudsman for investigation and waiting 18 months is no skin off my nose but I'm not sure the case is strong enough...0 -
Do it. Egg have been known to fib. And no one knows the definitive date they stopped pre-ticking.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0
