Hello fellas I need an advice as I am not a UK native and not aware of much things here please do guide me

So I bought a jacket worth 500£ on Jun 3 from asos.com.
i have received it on next day and i have had sent it back on the same day as it wasn't same as it was displayed on your website. i have sent it back via Royal mail (free standard return note) on 4 Jun 2014.
additionally and unfortunately i have lost the receipt somewhere at first I wasn't bothered as I was thinking that it will be returned as usual ... Because I have been costumer with asos for long now and normally it gets there back to their warehouse in 3 days but this took too long... i have phoned royal mail. they asked me for tracking number and i told the same thing and they said you need to contact your retailer and they will contact us and we will investigate.
even i have been to the Post office from where i have sent it back and the lady said i don't have access to pull up history and provide you a tracking number again ...
The retailer which asked for proof of postage which I clearly don't have
Instead they recommend to contact my card issuer to make a claim for any loss.

This is really very devastating situation for me how can a big company like Royal Mail don't have history or any record

What should I do to get my money back.

Any advice would be really appreciable. :(

Unfortunately Royal Mail lose a tiny percentage of items carried through its system. This is why they offer insurance and things like special delivery.
I appreciate it's late now but even if you did have a proof of postage, you'd be limited to claiming around £20. If you don't have proof of postage, you might be able to claim £3.60 worth of stamps.

If he had proof of postage ASOS would refund the whole amount.

You had one thing to keep track of. You failed.
    They have tens of millions.

There has been quite a serious fire at ASOS, not sure whether that would cause problems.
