Amazon UK Rights?

Hi,
I'm new to the forums, so sorry if this is in the wrong place.
On May 9, I bought a 500GB external hard drive on Amazon UK. It worked fine (although I noticed the cable wasn't great) until tonight (23 June) when the hard drive failed to work at all.
I contacted Amazon and they offered me a replacement or a partial refund to pay for a new cable. I asked them if I had any options if I took the partial refund for a cable and discovered the device itself was faulty (ie, if I could get a refund/replacement).
They said no. I could take the partial refund and after that nothing.
Is this right? I'm not well versed on the various acts, but do I really void any rights by accepting a partial refund (£6) in an attempt to fix my device so as not to lose 300GB of data?
Thanks
Josh

Keep life simple and take the replacement, if it is duff as well then you can push for a refund much easier. Can you not borrow a cable to test whether it is the cable or not?
Oh and no you wouldn't void any rights if the drive was faulty unless for example you used the wrong cable and it damaged the drive, but not likely.0 -
The cable isn't exactly normal. I don't have another cable like it, unfortunately.0

What kind of drive is it ? My suspicion is it will simply be a micro usb3 cable eg http://www.amazon.co.uk/Invero%C2%AE-Clickfree-Slimline-Portable-GT-N9000/dp/B00J3XF7PI which you can get for 3 quid (or possibly less elsewhere).0

It's a Toshiba 500GB. I've just noticed the cable I have is crooked so I'm hoping it's that. I've got a new one coming tomorrow so I'll know either way then.0
