...But the OP will be fine with a debit card, in most EU countries the term credit card is used for both internationally accepted debit and credit cards as credit cards are extremely rare in many EU countries like, France, Germany, The Netherlands etc.

Credit cards in Germany are available, but certainly not as widespread as in the UK. They often operate more like a charge card. i.e. You get a monthly bill that must be repaid in full.

Prepaid credit cards are also available - these are known as Geldkarte (money card), but are quite rare.

Debit cards in Germany are usually called EC-Cards (Eurocheque-Karte) and also sometimes Girocard, and are much more widely accepted.

However, cash is still often the preferred method of payment over much of Germany.

For identification with ec-cards/Maestro, your bank must have its registered office in Germany.

Thank you all for all the advice and tips, I am going down to my bank today to see if they will issue me with a Maestro card. If I cant get one should I enter my debit card details on the site where they EC card or credit card?

    Thanks

Yep that's correct. The Bahn website accepts ec Maestro cards or credit cards. I was thinking that if I couldn't get either I would try and input my VISA details in instead:/
  • Maybe a prepaid card like Kalixa?
