A car reversed into me today and has done minor damage to my car and even less damage to his own. I was a bit shocked and according to my OH I have been stupid as I didn't get enough info from the other driver and he reckons all the insurance company will do is just fix my car and not bother with the other guys insurance at all.
I took photos , got the registration number and details of the car and the guys name but when we discussed insurance I couldn't remember the name of my company (I remembered as soon as I got back in my car) and he said he had no docs on him but the insurance company would sort it all out.
My Oh insists it is more usual for people to exchange telephone numbers and phone each other to sort it all out in cases where the damage is minor and I've complicated it as my insurers just won't bother.
I'm fine, still a bit shocked as I saw it was going to happen and it was like it was in slow motion and I could do nothing but hit my horn but should I have insisted on phone number and address? Will the insurance company be Ok with the info I have or have I really messed up?

The correct "protocol" is both drivers inform their insurers, (and exchange details at the scene)
The innocent party can claim off his own company or the third party insurer.
The guilty party can only claim off his own insurer.
If you want to claim off the third party you can bet their insurance details off askmid site0 -
You are expected to give and receive the drivers name and address and the name and address of the registered keepers if different and registration numbers. Anything else is a bonus.
With the name and registration you should be fine.
