PPI Records Query

Hi,

I had a vehicle finance agreement back in 1997, which I am pretty sure had PPI, however, I can't remember which company the finance was with.

I've spoken to a few companies regarding this, but have been informed that because I don't have the account/agreement number and that it's more than 6 years old, most companies don't hold the records. I was also informed that even firms like Experian won't hold that sort of data if it's over 6 years old.

In a different phone call, I spoke to my bank, regarding an old credit card (that was closed more than 12 years ago), but they had everything on record, and happily processed my PPI claim.

Is there some way that I can find out who the finance was through (given that I've been through quite a few house moves since paying off the finance)?

You would complain to whoever sold you the ppi policy, was it the car dealer?

Experian doesn't hold data, it just has a list of your credit over 6 years.
Car dealers weren't regulated in 1997.
Unless you remember who it was, no-one else can.

Banks are different to car dealers. Most car dealers only became regulated in January 2005. Banks also became regulated under the same rules at that time but as they had an earlier code that was signed up to they have to consider complaints going back further. However, over time, they too will destroy records. Just not as quickly as others.

  • The Finance Agreement was only brokered by the vehicle dealership. I spoke to the dealership, who were reasonably helpful, and gave me the names of the likely Finance companies that they used at that point (they only used 2 or 3 at the time, the main one being Black Horse).

Back to the original question however:

Is there some way that I can find out who the finance was through (given that I've been through quite a few house moves since paying off the finance)?

Does anyone know if any CMC's would be able to help with these enquiries?

The broker carries the liability. i.e. the dealer.

Not that helpful at all really. They have the liability. The complaint should have been made to them. Remember that you are not complaining about PPI as a product. You are complaining that the PPI was mis-sold. The sale of it is the issue. Who sold it to you? The dealer.

    no

A CMC cant help. All they will do is send your complaint to the dealer. The dealer will reject it as being pre-regulation and no records found.
