Airline taxes

Can anyone explain to me how airline taxes can fluctuate so much. I booked flights to New York back in March and the cost was made up of £52 Fare and £370.20 tax = total £422.20. Now the overall price of the flights have dropped in price to £377.77 with the same company but the fare element has increased to £62 and the tax has dropped to £315.77. (I have checked with other companies for the exact same dates and the tax is same with them although the fare element can be lower, making the cheapest flights even lower). Is this a scam or might I be entitled to a refund?
It makes quite a difference to the overall price - £54.43 each extra on tax and we are a family of four so £217.72 extra on our holiday!!
I appreciate that fares can go up and down but am surprised that the taxes should change so much

Which airline?
Some of the "taxes" (biggest part likely) will be the fuel surcharge that can vary depending on the price of fuel.
You can check the taxes via ITA and see how it is made up - fuel surcharge tends to be classed as YQ
another thought - the changes is the tax values could also be due to forex. Taxes can be in many currencies. A $100 fee could be charges as £x one day and £y the next0 -
I'm not aware that you can actually get flights to New York in the UK - IIRC its only public transport access is a bus from Horncastle.
Maybe this should be asked in the appropriate subforum of the Overseas Forum?0 -
Taxes are imposed by governments
Anything else is charged by the airline and consists of whatever they decide a charge is - fuel surcharge, luggage allowance, airport usage charge, use of steps on landing...
... unless you are using airmiles of some sort then it doesn't matter what the charges are - only the final cost.
Don't stress it, it's marketing0
