JSA and council tax deductions help

Hi i just got a letter from the DWP today and, its a deductions from jobseekers allowence letter.
I had a overdue council tax bill, they sent me a letter with a court date saying they whete going to be applying for a liability order.
I phoned them up and paid the bill in full £157.03 excluding court costs.
With the court costs the bill would have been £237.03
The woman from the council said as i havent been to court yet i wont have to pay the aditional £80 court costs so i just paid the £157.03 she said this would clear my council tax bill for the year,

Right back to the DWP letter i got today.
There is 3 different deductions
£15.41 per week
£12.68 per week
£11.08 per week

It says on the back page
We have been asked to take money each week from your jobseekers allowrnce for your council tax and pay it to nuneaton and bedworth dc (ct)
Deduction start date 05/06/2014 weekly ammount £3.65

At 16/06/14 you will still owe £99.98

So how do i owe this money exactly as i paid my bill in full as i said above, can anyonr help or offer any advice as i know i dont owe the council anything

  • When you were summonsed there would have been costs added to the debt. You would have had to pay Council Tax plus costs. If these had been paid before the Court date then you wouldn't have had to pay for the liability order costs. As you didn't pay the costs a liability order was obtained and this is probably what you are paying.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

I paid it before the court date.
I got a summons for non payment letter i got this in the post on 14/05/2014
My court date was 2nd june 2014
I paid the bill on 30th may 2014
This is what it says on the letter
    Balance of council tax £157.03
You are also liable to pay costs of £80

The woman on the phone when i paid the council tax said "if you pay the council tax bill of £157.03 this would clear my bill until next year"
I paid with my debit card.

Most councils add costs when the summons is issued - these costs are due in addition to the council tax charge and can be subject to a liability order if unpaid (even if you clear the council tax charge).

If you feel the council mis-advised you then you need to contact them to discuss it and clarify what has happened.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thanks for the info but as far as im aware the woman i spoke to on the phone when i paid the council tax bill said as i have not been to court yet i would not be liable to pay the aditional court costs.
I will persue this as im on jsa low income and had to go without food for a whole week so i could afford to pay my council tax in full, its not on
