Garden gate question

Currently having our new fence installed after saving really hard and finally being able to afford it after three years. We have decided to keep the gate as it's only five years old (the fence was 39yrs old)
The gate is solid wood but I want to stain it, i have the stain but do I need to rub it all down first? I have a small electric sander and mask which I could use but I'm not sure if I need to do this?
