Existing Sky Customer or New Customer?

Hi, we're moving house. Currently have the top sky package including Talk which we never use and broadband which we always use! (Approx 100 pounds per month)

Just wondering is it better to just transfer to the new home or to register in wife's maiden name, making us new customers, to get a better deal?

Thanks

The money saving answer is take the better deal.

Factor in any cancellation charges ending your current contract invokes when calculating the saving.

Also the fact you are unable to open a new contract as an existing subscriber, to do so would be to commit fraud,as you would be agreeing you or anyone in you household has never had sky before

Assuming your wife has taken your surname, her maiden name would no longer be on bank accounts etc. .

Does it even matter she has the same surname? A different first name is a new customer to Sky.

e.g. John Smith leaves Sky and his missus signs up under her name Joanne Smith, she is a new customer.

My parents have done this in the past with Sky and BT.

But you make a false declaration when you say you or anyone in the household has ever had sky.

Genuinely interested if you could point me to this on Sky's website? Not sure how it could be checked or enforced, other than using the same bank account for the Direct Debit.. I've been on other forums and Sky's own staff suggest it all the time.
  • Thanks everyone for their helpful responses! I should have said I had Sky before missus moved in. The direct debit came out of my account every month. Now, we're looking to shave a bit off the bills whilst in the process of moving. Technically, she could be a new customer as even setting up gas and electricity services since moving we were informed the bills could be addressed to only one of us! She has a separate bank account so no issue there.

We'd hardly be committing crime of the century!! and TBH once she's contacted Sky it may be cheaper to move our existing gear than setting up as a new customer. Incidentally, isn't all the equipment defunct once account deactivated so it's no good to anyone anyway!

    Thanks

The equipment goes on to serve as a Freesat-From-Sky receiver when the subscription is terminated. It will still work perfectly well, except that it will no longer receive PayTV channels . All the Free-To Air channels remain viewable as before. So it's hardly "defunct"

The point about signing as a new customer is that Sky only offer to provide free equipment once to each household. If your "household" moves to another location, technically Sky expect you to use their "Home Move" service and continue as before. Sky will erect a new dish at your new property if there is not one there already, but you are required to use your existing decoder(s).

To be honest, it's usually only people who remain at the same address and claim they are new customers who encounter problems. If your partner has no earlier relationship with Sky (and uses a different bank account) there is no way for Sky to know that you were a former customer.

I used live chat when I cancelled my TV last month and the guy said to me 'there is one option to get new customer offers, you could cancel and then get your partner to sign up'. :rotfl:

I'm guessing either the live chats aren't monitored, or Sky really don't bother that much about it!
