A chilling fable of a heroic girl prepared to risk everything in the pursuit of justice.
‘Fearless is powerful, haunting and utterly original, a disturbing but ultimately uplifting story of an indomitable child who will not be crushed by the system. I think it will become an immediate children's classic. Fearless is fabulous in all senses of the word.’ - Jacqueline Wilson
‘A dark moral fable with an engaging, inspiring heroine, Fearless will provide narrative thrills for readers of all ages.’ - Sarah Waters
With his first novel for young adult readers Tim Lott has created a chilling fable set in the future. Fearless depicts a dystopian world in which terrorism and anarchy is rife. Only within the City walls is law and order maintained. The City is run by the City Boss and the Ten Corporations under strict rules and tight surveillance. Children who do not behave are removed from their families and sent to the Community Faith School outside the City walls.
While the residents of the City believe this school to be an exemplary educational establishment, in reality it is a prison where one thousand girls are forced to labour in the city’s laundry. The girls have been stripped of their real names and identities, and are graded as ‘X’, ‘Y’ or ‘Z’ girls by rank. One very brave girl, Little Fearless, never gives up hope that they will one day be rescued by their families. But each time she manages to escape from the Institute and return to the City she finds that no one will believe that she’s telling the truth.
Though written primarily for younger readers, Fearless has universal appeal. It is a classic tale of freedom, imprisonment and redemption. With echoes of Orwell, Fearless addresses issues of control and religion in society, but above all it is a haunting, powerful story.
‘Tim Lott's beautiful Fearless will make you laugh and break your heart. This wonderful update of Brave New World features the best heroine I've encountered in some time.’ - Matt Thorne
