Free £50 to close Barclaycard account

Hi just wanted to let you all know I just tried to close my Barclaycard account, of which I've had for 6 years paying interest for the last few years on over £3000
(it's ok now all my debts are cleared :T). They tried offering free interest on any spending for the next year, home or abroad, big or little purchases but I still said I wanted to close account.
At the end the guy said you've paid a lot of interest to Barclaycard you can have a £50 transferred straight into your account (which you can transfer into your bank if you want) for keeping it open. I asked if I needed to keep it open , he said there's no contract but he'd like me to for "a while".
Thought it might be worthwhile knowing this
Happy account closing

They do seem happy to give out free £50's to customers who have used their cards well.
Bear in mind if you call to cancel, you'll need to have a £0 balance before they entertain offering you £50!
Well done OP

they gave me 3 x £20s when i tried to close my account 3 times in a week. eventually they kind of got annoyed that i kept trying to close my account and refuse to give me any more freebies - gits!
edit: best way to get money from them is to sound undecided and if they had any incentives for me to keep my account open, such as a credit to my account. works wonders.0 -
I also received a £50 payment to keep the account open, i declined this and they upped my limit and reduced my APR so i couldn't really say no! They are very keen to keep customers.0

i lowered my credit limit from 5k to £50 myself 6 month ago, have zero balance and they game me £50 to leave it open. happy days a free £50
I have worked out they have had £8 interest off me on this card since 2011, as its sat dormant for ages
at first they offered 9 month interest free lol on a £50 limit. then hold then £50
thank you barclaycard0 -
I've just phoned to cancel my Barclaycard account as I'd done a balance transfer to M&S so that I'm not paying interest and I get cashback when I spend.
Barclaycard were obviously desperate to keep me. I got offered £40 reward for loyalty and being a good customer, new balance transfer and purchase interest rates of 0% for 6 months and 1.5% cashback on purchases.
It would appear it's worth claiming you'll close your account every so often even if you don't intend to. I've now got a better cashback offer than I could have got anywhere else.0 -
Yes it's nothing new for them to offer some sort of incentive for you to stay. I think it's been mentioned here before.
Is it not worth keeping that card regardless because of the experian credit check offer?0 -

You only get access to your Experian credit score, which is updated every two months. I don't think it's worth keeping a Barclaycard for that alone.0 -
Hey that's my kind of bank account. Anyone know how long I would have to keep the account to get 50 quid for closing it?0
