Credit card application advice, please

Hello,

I currently have around £3800 on a Halifax MasterCard account, credit limit £7500, and I am finally being proactive about actually paying it off (and not just the minimum plus a little extra!)What I want to do is balance transfer to a 0% account and then pay off before the specified 0% period is over.

My Experian credit rating is 981 and both Experian and MSEs have suggested some of the same cards to apply for however some advice would be useful.

Barclay Card is the main issuer that has been suggested to me but my real concern is when applying and it asks 'how much do you wish to transfer' does putting in the amount have any bearing on the approval or on the credit limit given?

what should I do if I am a) given a lower limit that required b) rejected?

Also, can anyone provide me with their experience of going with cards that the MSE credit card eligibility search turned up - Barclay card 33month 0% with 2.99% fee is 90%, or BC 18month 0% with 2.9% fee is 80% but a Post Office card 18month 0% and 0.7% fee which would be cheaper in the long run is only 50%.

As you can tell I'm a bit lost and a bit timid about applying, advice will be most welcome.

Thanks

    a) I would transfer as much as you can to the new card and then either continue to pay off the remainder on the existing card or try applying for another new 0% card.

    b) I would make one more application for a different 0% card.

  • How much per month could you afford?

If £212 or more, I'd go for the Post Office card.

The fee would be just £26-60, compared with £113-62 for the 33 month Barclaycard, and £110-20 for the 18 month Barclaycard.

    Thanks.

£200 per month is my aim.

Even with the decreased chance of getting the post office card it would still be the option to apply for first?

Does putting in the full amount I wish to balance transfer have any bearing on the approval or on the credit limit given?

Nobody ever seems to be able to answer this very well, I guess partly because nobody can say for sure and partly because lenders may vary.

I suspect it doesn't have any bearing on the outcome.

Post office always seems to give slightly different results on the checker. For me it was the only card on the checker that was less than 80% chance (it was 70%), but I've read a couple of posts where people had a very low chance of acceptance for most other cards said post office came out highest at around the 50-60% chance mark.
