When i did Jury Duty and it got towards the end of the second week, they asked us before selecting us if the trial was expected to be a long one. Anyone who said that they really needed to get back to work, or go on holiday for example was excused.

If you're in full-time employment, unless you have a very accommodating employer then a long stint of jury service could give a very harsh financial hit ... Jury service remuneration does not pay your normal salary.

I think that depends on what your rate of pay is.

When i did Jury Service, my rate of pay wasn't very good, so I was actually better off on Jury Service.

I got more money (salary with no tax or NI deducted), for less hours.

Your court was quite tolerant/generous then. I was once called into court as a possible juror for a longer case. Several people had to give their excuses as to why they couldn't do a long case but not all were accepted. One person had a weekend away booked in the near future but was told that they couldn't go. I didn't do that case myself in the end.
When I did serve on the jury, my case lasted 3.5 days. At the end of that week, we were told that we would not be needed for the 2nd week.

My employer topped up my pay for that week so that I wouldn't lose out.

Wow I genuinely thought employers had to carry on paying you if you have to do Jury Service! I guess I'm pretty naive!

Okay, now officially changed to NOT wanting to get called for it!!

I think it depends on the company, if you work for one that employs thousands of worker, then normally they have full procedures in place for situations like this.

I got paid my standard rate of pay when I did jury service, without any issue, by my company, but I didn't go over the 2 weeks, I got to a week and a half and was told I was no longer required.

As for hoping to get a long trail, well that depends on several things, for one, mine was awkward to get to and from.

I also wouldn't have wanted a gruesome case or one involving children or anything very boring.

Had it been something like out of a thriller film, with attempted murder or similar, then it could have been enjoyable. Even then, I know people who have been on a jury and felt very intimidated by family and friends of the defendant.

I am really glad that I did do jury service. I found the experience very positive even though it was a serious case. It certainly made an interesting break from the normal working day. Just hope that we made the correct decision.
