Best shampoo - silicone free? and do you really need conditioner?!

Hi all,

I have long, thick, dyed blonde hair (natural colour is medium brown!). I like to blow dry it straight-ish.

I have been using a silicone-free pantene shampoo as I find smoothing shampoos with silicone can make my hair sticky.

I have actually given up using conditioner in the shower as it makes a mess, costs a lot given how much I was using and not sure how much difference it makes given it just washes down the plughole!

Instead I just use a few drops of loreal miracle oil before blowdrying.

Does anyone have thoughts on a cheap, light shampoo that doesn't weigh hair down but doesn't make it sticky or frizzy.
AND: what do you reckon to the skipping conditioner in the shower bit?

Any other suggestions welcome as I fear I have wasted a lot of money on this here mop of hair over the years!!!!

Many thanks in advance and keep up the good work, people!!

I use Timotei shampoo from the pound shop as it's free from parabens, colourants and silicones, and doesn't weigh down my hair. I hate that sticky feeling too. It's cheap and I actually like it!
I do use conditioner, but not every wash, I have curly hair and it gets very tangled without it.

Thanks, freckles!! I will give Timotei a go. I remember the advert from when I was a little girl - the lady washing her long, long hair in the waterfall!!!

    Yes, me too.

Mine doesn't look like that, sadly...not yet anyway!

I do things the other way round - as in only use conditioner and no shampoo :) (for my hair, cheap conditioner works best)

Tell us more, Yolina! Do you use conditioner in place of shampoo ie do you "lather up" with it. OR just rinse hair with water and then condition?!

What sort of hair do you have?

    thanks!!

I just use it like I would shampoo then spread it through and leave it on whilst I wash, then rinse. My hair is long (as in down to the small of my back) and (very) straight. It's a far more gentle wash so it takes a couple of week at first for hair to adjust to not getting stripped bare by shampoo. I do use shampoo once a month after I've done a homemade oil mask because otherwise I'd never get the stuff off properly :p but that's it.

It's a bit trial and error to find a conditioner that your hair will be happy with, but on the whole I've found the cheap stuff is better as is doesn't usually have silicone and the likes - if you don't strip the hair with shampoo, you don't need to put "stuff" back on it with conditioner :rotfl: Alberto Balsam mandarin & papaya works great for me but your mileage may vary

I almost never use conditioner (only when I colour it at home), and have not had any trouble, in fact hairdressers always comment on what good condition my hair is in. That said, I also very seldom use heat on my hair, so that probably helps.

I recently used conditioner on my ends for the first time in ages. I was in a cold, dry climate and my hair was very static-y. The conditioner helped smooth things down.

WRT shampoo - I only use clear shampoo (i.e. not the creamy-looking ones, as they tend to make my hair greasy), but I'm not particularly loyal to any one brand and change after every bottle. Herbal Essenses seems to make a come back fairly often, if I think about it.

I am similar to Yolina in that I can happily go without shampoo but couldn't do without conditioner. I have fine and curly hair, and it gets dried out very easily by shampoo, but I end up with a lot of tangled, dry, frizziness with no conditioner.

Sometimes I just use natural products instead of shampoo. Have you googled the no-poo movement?
