From an MSE standpoint the 360 makes a lot of sense against the One, you can get 6 years of games for peanuts. To a 15 year old it would be like asking for a car for your birthday and unwrapping a Raleigh Chopper.
  • yes. there is a huge difference between the xb1 and the 360. the xbox one gets a lot of bad press for not being as powerful as ps4 but if you are 100% gaming focused then you would buy a pc!!!

Saying that i spend the majority of time on the xbox one, the controller is comfy and games are great. I had a problem with my kinect and had to send it away but was repaired and sent back within 2 weeks which was good.

You have to make sure that his mates all have the same console or it wont work. The newer xbox doesnt play old xbox games which is annoying. if you can afford it go xbox one but it will get cheaper soon(ish)

They will still produce Xbox 360 games but what you'll have to appreciate is is that it'll be the likes of your FIFAS, Call of Duty, Battlefields et al, there wont be any specific Xbox 360 only games produced after the next year (with the exceptions of ones in development now) however there are literally hundreds of 360 games available which are amazing and well worth a play.

I don't see the point in getting a 360 when he already has a PS3 as a lot of the decent titles for the 360 are multi-platform.

but if you are 100% gaming focused then you would buy a pc!!!

there is a lot of mis interpretation about consoles vs pc gaming and here is the undisputable facts that influence consoles in favour of PC gaming:

    - consoles are a unified closed system. it is much easier for developers to make games primarily for consoles and then port to the PC.

this why most PC games that are also on consoles, never utilise all the hardware you may have bought. a console game uses close to 100% of the hardware inside it. the same game on the PC uses a much smaller percentage, even on maximum settings.

all you have to do is check the recommended system requirements for PC games and you will see that despite you having bought a core i7 CPU and a radeon R9 270X graphics card and 16GB of DDR3 ram, the game only wants hardware you would have bought for your PC a couple of years ago.

    - because designing games on consoles is expensive in it's own right, publishers / developers or both for said games will do the bare minimum when bringing the same game to the PC. they won't treat the PC version with a higher level of optimization than the console because it takes longer and costs a lot more money.

it's easier, simpler, and fairer to everyone on every gaming platform to get the same experience no matter what you are playing on. this is why despite a lot of games on PC having settings to enhance the performance and quality, it still looks highly comparable to the console experience.

    - despite PCs having more powerful hardware available to them compared to the consoles, the games are not going to be any worse or better than console port games coming over to the PC. actually, this also applies to pretty much all games, even ones that are made for the PC only.

this is because the PC has an operating system like windows and it takes a lot more resources for the software (the game) to utilise the hardware because it must talk to the operating system first as a middle man if you will, and then to the hardware of the PC. in a console, there is virtually no operating system, so when games are made on them they need LESS hardware specs to get the outcome they want. on the PC they need more hardware resources because the operating system and it's overheads are in the way. now the reason why not all, but most PC exclusive games also fall into this category is because developers realise that not everyone in the world who games on a PC has a £1000+ machine.

most PC gamers are gaming on machines that cost in the range of £400-700 total cost, including a monitor, gamepad, peripherals and speakers and so on. they have to cater to the larger market. it does of course mean that someone who in their ill informed approach went and built a £1000-2000+ gaming PC with the latest PC hardware is NEVER going to be able to make use out of that PC hardware until developers NEED that same level of hardware in a console in order to make the games they want. that might be the case for a pc at that price today in 10 years time. the only benefit is that if you overkill your PC hardware, you simply do not need to upgrade it for many many years.

so in essence, why is it like this and not the other way around? why are consoles catered to in the gaming front of the world rather than computers? well, there's only 2 simple reasons. cost and comfort.

cost - consoles are cheaper to design and equip and because of some of the points made above, will allow games to perform far more easily on cheaper hardware. this translates into powerhouse consoles at affordable prices. the idea of a true gamer only gaming on a super expensive PC is an incorrect and biased stereotype. most gamers across the world for many decades have been gaming on consoles or portable handhelds much more so than the PC because of the benefits of cost.

comfort - because of points made above, particularly unified and closed system points, there is the undisputed knowledge that when you buy any console, MOST of the time that console is going to have 5-7, maybe 8 years of constant support for it. in other words, games. many games. now, this doesn't mean or imply the PC doesn't get as many games. it in fact gets more games. in fact, the PC has more games on steam now than the PS3 and xbox 360 combined. However, for these 5-8 years or possibly more (as we are currently seeing with the xbox 360 and the PS3) these consoles are 100% unchanged. from the moment they release, to the end of their entire life of support, the hardware will never change. all games made for them, will work just as the machine shipped on it's first day, 8 years later for example. this comfort knowing that it lasts and is catered for, is a peace of mind with a lot of people.

finally, there is only 1 honest thing to conclude here.

game on whatever makes you happy. but do so being happy for what you have. don't sit there thinking... i could be having a better experience on PS4 / XBOX ONE / PC / WII U because of silly misguided things like better hardware, keyboard and mouse is more precise, consoles get games i can only play there and so on.

just take your pick, or multiple picks and be happy with your choice.

despite the downsides and pitfalls of PC gaming, it's STILL the machine that will give you the undisputed best gaming experience in terms of just you and the game and the screen you are looking at. you can in fact get a 15 meter HDMI cable and plug your PC from another room neatly into your living room TV and play games on a wireless 360 controller like you do on a console if you want to - but you also need a wireless mouse and keyboard and you will need to adjust your DPI settings in windows to at least 125% so you can actually see the desktop properly before you can get to click on things like steam big picture and so on... and sometimes windows 7 bugs and still outputs your sound through your PC speakers in the other room - so in a nutshell, it's not a fluid experience and it cannot mimic the same couch quality experience you get from an elegant and powerful console...

and that's why you have 2 camps. pc gamers and console gamers. each are relevant. each are important. each are wonderful in their own unique ways and no one has right to say one is worse or better.

console gaming will forever be cheaper than PC gaming and better in terms of value, performance and quality, but PC gaming will forever be the creme de la creme / mother of all gaming amazingness and only by a small margin, but for some people that small margin is worth the extra money and if that's what makes you happy - go for it.

finally the truth has been spoken about PS4 vs XBOX One vs Wii U vs PC. now i can relax. phew.
  • Just jumping in with my two cents - a few of my hardcore gaming friends have recently downgraded from the Xbox one back to the 360, simply due to a lack of games and lack of online players. Now these friends of mine are the sort to rinse a game from start to finish in a matter of hours (yes, they need to get a life, I know) so circumstances may be different for yourself.

I reckon you could pick up a 360 second hand for a decent price these days, and on the xbox marketplaceon the 360 you get two free games a month, so it may be worth investing in a 360 and saving up and waiting for the one to come down in price for a next birthday/christmas?

Just worth pointing out that you only get two free games a month if you are an Xbox Gold Live subscriber at the time. This costs between £25 - £30 for a year's subscription (and is necessary to play games online on the Xbox One and 360).

Game are having a preowned sale on at the moment.

    £40 for an Xbox 360.

Please take into account the free games can take up to 10gb in space on the HDD - You would need to invest in one, unless you delete the previously stored game.

Obviously you would require internet access for downloading of said games.

I personally switched from the Xbox ONE to the ps4 in April.

I would say if he has a PS3 there is no point getting a Xbox360 as most of the games are across consoles.

There is a noticeable difference in graphics between the One and 360 but remember that this is still early days, and the current games dont take full advantage of the next gen consoles. Games will keep getting better over the next few years for the Xbox One.

Also personally I would get a PS4 over xbox as you cant play used games on the One. :)
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Stick to the 360 for now, miles more games and more people playing them! And the games are slightly cheaper, win win if you ask me!
