XBox one or XBox 360?

My son (15) has been asking for a xbox for months now. he has a birthday coming up and insists that he wants a xbox one. He already has a PS3 (fifa/cod/Skyrim seem to be favourite at the moment) Is he conning me or is there a HUGE difference in the performance i.e. graphics of the xbox one or should he be happy with xbox 360? Not really sure why he wants it in the first place apart from the fact some of his mates from school have it so he cant play online with them. If they have xbox 360 and he gets xbox one can he play online with them or does it need to be same version console??

No those on the 360 can't play against those on the X One so needs to be the same version. Check his friends have the One before you splash out, its a huge outlay for a birthday. The 360 on the other hand is cheaper though but it depends which 1 his friends have.0

Personally, I'd wait for it to go down in price, but I am a cheap skate.0

The Xbox One and Xbox 360 are completely different machines. Software designed for one will not work with the other. If he wants an Xbox as an upgrade to his current console, it's likely that he's after an Xbox One as that is now the current generation of games console (whereas the PS3 and Xbox 360 are now last generation).
However, the Xbox One, being less than a year old, is still relatively expensive. They've just dropped the price down to £350 for a model without the Kinect peripheral included, but that still isn't cheap. It will probably fall in price a little towards Christmas (maybe to the £299 mark in some store promotions), but it won't be getting cheaper much sooner in my opinion.0 -
even if you decide to splash out on a One console, remember the games will also be more expensive for it.0

The only thing I'd like to say is will they still produce games for the 360? The reason is we have a Wii I know it is a totally different concept but since the WiiU has come out there are very limited games for the original machine unless you buy 2nd hand.
My son is 12 and says that everyone in his form, well almost everyone either got given a PS4 or XBox 1 for Christmas can I just ask what sort of tv you need for these machines? Personally I think it is a huge amount of money and would rather him spend his time on other things but as he gets older he will have less time as will need to study more. I don't even know which is better out of the 2 and do you have to have ethernet connection nearby? We are out in the sticks so broadband is slow.
Sorry don't want to hijack your thread OP.0 -

My grandsons have one of each at my house so they can gradually migrate from 360-One.
I only buy games online and so far , with extensive searching , have found the One games " slightly " cheaper than the 360 !
Most of their friends have the 360 so the One is only used occasionally at the moment until more of them gradually switch over.0 -
The xbox one is better and as mentioned by Keith above, if you buy games from online stores then you can pick them up for similar or less the price of 360 games (simplygames are an awesome site and have cracking prices).
To get the best out of the xbox one you need a full hd (1080p) television and it's also a benefit having either a good surround sound headset or surround sound system.
I'd imagine they will still produce games for the 360 for the next few years, they will begin to look more and more dated as developers get to grips with the xbox one and can make new games do all sorts of tricks.
If his friends all own 360's then he would be as well with one of them however the OP mentioned he already has a PS3 and there really isn't much difference between both that and the 360.0 -

You would need a tv with a HDMI port and a set that is either 720p, 1080p or 4K for Xbox One or 480p, 720p, 1080p, 1080i or 4K for PS4.
Which is better of the 2 is subjective, there will be those who say the PS4 is better and others who say the Xbox One is better, id wait for the price to come down but when that will be is anyones guess.
The ethernet connection doesn't have to be nearby, I guess the closer it is the better.0 -
to the OP, you may not understand the following but i will try keep it as easy as possible to understand:
xbox one soon gets this thing called direct x 12 from microsoft. currently it's direct x 11.1. 12 is better in every way and games will be a lot better. it's software and the machine downloads it by itself as part of an update. all your son has to do is enjoy the benefits when it comes to the console over the internet.
xbox one is soon going to be available for roughly around £80-100 less than it is now without the kinect (the video camera bar). if your son only wants to play video games and enjoy those games with his friends, then the xbox one just became fairly cheaper for you to buy. you just may have to hold off getting it for him as a birthday present. it's going to be available as a standalone machine with 1 controller and the power plug without the kinect this year, so maybe an xmas present for him? it's going to cost around £350 instead of £429.
here's internet proof:

The version without Kinect will be most likely sell for less than £350 (this will be RRP) from quite a few retailers. ShopTo.net sell an xbox one, Kinect and forza motorsport 5 for £369 or with Fighter Within (terrible terrible game) for £350.0
