Unfair revised final bill from Npower

Hello
Just wondering if anyone has had similar experience or can advise me please...We switched from Npower in January 2013 and paid our final bill. This January we received an amended final bill for another £40 ish. I contacted Npower to ask why but operator was unable to explain, I finally had an email response which said we'd been charged too little the first time round so we had to pay extra.
Is there a time limit within which energy providers have to finalise accounts? I really think it's ridiculous to send a revised bill the best part of a year after we stopped being their customer! Personally I feel that I want to tell them where to go, but don't know whether I have a leg to stand on!
Thanks in advance

They are not necessarily doing anything unlawful or otherwise "improper" here if there is evidence that the original bill was incorrect but then you're similarly doing nothing wrong if you write back and ask them to clearly explain / justify this new bill.

For £40 they may do so (assuming that it is justifiable), or then again they may just decide that it's more trouble than it's worth to them :p

If you genuinely believe that the bill is not owed and don't pay and they don't provide the explanation you seek then the only thing they could do is pursue it through the courts. Again probably more trouble than it's worth

    OP
What are the end meter readings on the 2 "final" bills from Npower, and which of the 2 is the same reading that started the first bill from the new supplier.
If it is the amended bill that corresponds then unfortunately you owe the £40.

did your new supplier contest the change of supply read?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Just to clarify, the bill was amended because they originally charged too little for the units, rather than there being any change to the number of units used. So basically, they messed up in the first place, and then totally out of the blue sent a new bill with a higher charge per unit. I have no way of looking back at the tariffs at the time, and we'd only been in the property a few months so have to take their word for it that the original bill had the wrong charge on it.
    Thanks
