Hi all - any recent holiday experiences in Rhodes?
Any "must see" touristy things? We are quite interested in the archaeology/ mythology stuff... We are there for a week - we'd prefer the "warts and all" views of the MSE crowd to the tourism publicity.
Also any "warnings"?
We are flying there and back via Athens, (overnight stay on way home) and have read mixed reviews of the differences between what appear to be internal flights and external flight departure lounges at Rhodes airport.
Cheers folks:beer:

Lindos is pretty but heaving. The church of the panagia is worth a walk up to.
We hired a car and just followed any roads that look interesting. I can remember seeing the signs for Anthony Quinn bay and thinking "tourist trap." But actually later in the day when the crowds have gone, it was a pleasant stop. I also enjoyed the valley of the butterflies although it wasn't butterfly season when we were there. The seven springs had run out of water and I wouldn't recommend it - basically a caf! and not much else.
Archeology wise, I just like mooching so am fairly happy with most things. Rhodes town itself, obviously, nothing else is coming to mind at the moment. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
A day out to the art deco island of Simi by boat. Book it at the kiosks at Rhodes harbour. Here's some nice photos...

If you go into the main Rhodes Town tourist area, and fancy a bit of this...

...make sure you know exactly how much it costs.0 -
I will be on Rhodes for a week shortly at a medical conference, I bet I won't get much time for sight seeing tho, or...... sigh, partying.0

Rhodes Town is amazing, plenty of history to get your teeth into.
Please please please steer clear of reps who want to give you a scratchcard - its a holiday club/timeshare thing and best avoided. You have to go to another resort in a taxi (they pay for it) and spend 2 hours being sold to. We did it out of devilment (and free drinks) to see what it was all about. We didn't take up the offer of club membership needless to say.
Loved my time in Lindos (this time last year), which as elsien says can get very busy. Didn't have a bad meal in any restaurant there I can honestly say.
The Acropolis is a good climb up - I didn't want to stress the poor donkeys out having to carry me up there - with wonderful views and again, loads of history.0 -
The Temple of Athina in Lindos is worth a visit.
It's a trek up or you can hire a donkey.
Lindos itself is very pretty, very narrow cobbled alleyways but can be heaving if a cruise ship is in Rhodes Town.
Rhodes town is picturesque too, the harbour is nice.
There's also the Palace of the Grand Master, worth seeing.
I believe you can also walk round the old city walls.
Beware of some of the bars/restaurants in Rhodes Town.
Some lure you in and then when you order a beer, they bring a massive 'boot' and charge you a fortune for it.
Just check out the menus/price lists and be clear about what you want.

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated!

Prasonisi right at the base of the island is a great place to visit. It's where the Mediterranean and the Aegean Seas meet so you can literally stand with one foot in each. One side is choppy and the other calm.
Monolithos village and the castle on the west side of the island will give you a taste of real Greece and the views from the castle are stunning.
Take a drive up into the mountains. If you follow the signs for Eleousa from Kolymbia and then onwards to Profitis Ilias you can then pass right over and come out on the west side. Some lovely little chapels on the way but only go this way if you have a head for heights as there are some small high roads!:beer:0 -

Pet Peeves.... queues, vain people and hypocrites ..not necessarily in that order.0 -
I loved the old town. Walking along the walls, through the cobbled streets and out on to the habour. Didn't even bother looking at the new town half.Current Debt: 0%.Current House Deposit: 7%.0

We went in 2008 when our son was 3. We stayed in Pefkos, which is a more family oriented resort (rather than the party-paradise of Faliraki). I'd suggest hiring a car and driving round a bit - nowhere is too far for a day trip. If you can see the butterfly place (Petaloudes?) then that's amazing at the right time of the year. Avoid the laughable "seven springs" (blink and you'll miss them) and try and find all the temples and ruins.0
