Paypal cheques... and ebay

Hi,

Hope someone can help!

Firstly need to set the scene..! :)

1) I put in my ebay listings that I dont accept cheques (partly cos of the amount of time it takes to clear, but mainly because it costs me money to pay them into the bank - business account).
2) The customer in question has negative feedback that states that 2/3 cheques that they have sent have bounced... Quite a regular occurence.

Ok, here's whats happening..

I've had a bidder purchase an item (buy it now), and they have paid by cheque, into their paypal account, claiming that this will be ok for me, as it'll clear. The paypal notification of payment came on the 20th of april, with paypal saying it would be cleared by the 25th (last tuesday). As of today, it is still showing in my paypal account as being 'uncleared'. Since the initial payment notification, I've had a couple of emails from the seller, DEMANDING to know where their item is to which I've replied saying that paypal hasn't shown it as being cleared. Also, the guy has stated twice that he wants feedback, not asked. Tonight, I emailed him to say that it seems odd that it is taking so long to clear, as well as responding to his latest 'request' for the item.

He replied to this, with 'I've offered to pay you another way' (which he hasn't, unless he's telepath(et)ic), and also 'I wasn't DEMANDING feedback, just stating that I won't give you any unless you give me some'... Seems like he needs to be taught how to use ebay!

Ok, the thing is, I'm pretty fed up of his attitude for what amounts to a few ££'s (<£5!). I'm going to refund his money to him IF it ever appears in my paypal account. However, I have a hunch he'll leave a negative feedback for me if I do this. Is there any way of ensuring that he can't do this? Can I say he is a non-paying bidder, and then relist the item? (After 11 days, I'd say he was non-paying...).

Hope someone can advise!

I had someone a few months ago pay with a cheque through Paypal ... it took about a week longer to clear than the Paypal estimate, and the buyer was absolutely genuine. I'd say wait and see for a few days more.

    look at the paypal account,
is his address verified?, is the address he's asking you to post to the same as this verified one?

you're pretty much guarenteed a neg off him, so you have two choices

    - neg him back with his phone number or something in the feedback, ebay will usually remove both feedbacks

    - neg him back (using ebay tiawan for 125 characters) with a nice THREATENS TO NEG UNLESS I DISCOUNTED PRICE AFTER ACUTIION or something to that effect. and reply to his feedback on your page to describe what happened

if you have a lot of good feedback, and he has little, a comment like that will hurt him more than you

I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

If you leave a phone number in feedback you get the warning on your account, not the person you have negged, so possibly not a good idea. A well worded neg is much better, I like bleughs suggestion as it implies a dodgy buyer.

As for these echeques, there is another thread on this board today already about them so have a read of that. They can take a full 10 working days to clear and paypal themselves warn you not to send goods until payment is clear. Find the original paypal notification that gives that warning and cut and paste it to the buyer. Do not send items until you have cleared payment.

Thanks, you've all been pretty helpful. It's not actually me thats selling the item, but my dad, so I'll suggest to him some of the things that you have said. I think sending the paypal notification back to the guy is the best bet for now, and then see how it goes from there.

    Cheers!

E-Cheques take 10 days to clear minimum. Just stay calm and tell him you will post when its cleared. I have only had 3 of them the first two I waited until it had cleared the 3rd I just posted out (<£5).

When you post the item put a note in telling the buyer that you hope he will leave feedback when he is happy and the transaction is closed and you will reciprocate.

To be fair PayPal advertise this badly saying 5 days to clear and I can understand buyers getting hackked off. Tell him to phone PayPal if he is not happy.

    Good luck!!
