Debt Company chasing for gym membership - do we pay??

Hi, hope someone can shed some light.
My boyfriend was called today from a debt recovery company on behalf of the gym he used to go to.
The issue is, he received the gym membership as a gift, which lasted a year. The membership was in his name, but all contact details & payment details were by his ex girlfriend as she bought him the membership.
Now the gym/debt company are chasing for £140 payment for gym renewal, even tho he has never signed a contract with them, hasn't renewed and hasn't been there for at least 6 months either! (the membership expired 28/2/14).
Many thanks

Perhaps it was on auto renewal, how did the ex pay for the initial gift,
He needs to read the contract.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
He hasn't got a contract, never signed one and is not sure how it was paid as he didn't pay for it0
-
Ask them to provide a copy of a contract signed by him, they might get the message and leave him alone.0

Thanks Johno100, that's what I thought; start at the beginning and see what they have on file - can he be chased/liable though, even if he didn't sign, although his name is on the membership?0

I don't see how he can be bound by a contract with the gym entered into by a third party.0

And make sure he checks his credit file to see that there are no defaults.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Triple check that your information is correct, it may well be that she paid for it but it was in his name/ signed by him.0
