Car insurance - Letter from 3rd party

Hi all.
Involved in a car accident recently and exchanged details with the other person. Phoned insurance company as soon as I got home.
8 days later I receive a letter from their claim company basically saying/reminding me about the importance of letting my insurers know about the accident and that they expect my insurers to contact them within 7 days.
Is this kind of letter normal? Wouldn't my insurers already been in contact with the other insurers? Should I call my insurers and see what's up?
Last time I had an accident I relied on the insurers only to have a county court claim land on my mat as both insurers were contesting liability and no one had told us. I don't want to go through that stress again.

Forward the letter unanswered to your insurer to deal with0

Sounds like a standard template letter to me.
As Quentin advises, forward it to your insurers and make sure they are taking steps to deal with the claim, rather than it being stuck in the usual backlog of work.0
