Negotiating job salary

I don't know if this is the proper forum for the topic described below.

SWIM recently got offered a job for PM in IT in Brighton.
SWIM's background is software dev for 4 years and scrum master for 1 year.
SWIM was offered 37.5k to be reviewed after a 3 month probation period and 20 days holidays.
Do you think this is negotiable? SWIM's friends suggested that he takes this offer and after the 3 months he asks for more. The job includes 1-2 times/week travel in London. SWIM wants around 45k. Or is he asking too much?

Rule of thumb is you bank the salary you start on, any 'reviews' are more times than not BS.

Just saying PM in IT in Brighton doesn't really mean a lot. Only you know your worth and what you will settle for.

20 days holiday for £20k+ salary seems shocking to me. 25 days would be the average at the 37.5k bracket.

Someone who isn't me, it normally is me.

Negotiate now imo or prepare for a long wait for a substantial rise. In my experience, it's rare to see anything other than a token rise at review.

Ok, but what if they like(need) SWIM and don't want to let him go after the 3-month, and he goes something like "well, this is how much I need now" say 45k, would they prefer to let go a person who they started building a relationship with and recruit again?

If they are prepared to pay X in 3 months they are prepared to pay X now.

I'd be asking for what you expect to have as a salary now, if after 3 months you don't get it can you be sure you will be able to go elsewhere and get it?

I think it depends upon how much they want the job. There are some things money can't buy e.g. nice colleagues, flexible working, training and development opportunities, generous pension.

However, if they want to negotiate start they should prepare a 'business case' demonstrate how their skills are 'worth' the higher salary, e.g. if they have qualifications and skills which are over and above the minimum for the job. Adverts for similar roles locally which are paying more etc.

Seems on the low side for a IT PM role especially darn sarf, I would expect to see that salary oop north, although its worth calculating the value of any package given.

Have a look on indeed.com to get a wider comparison.
