How to recover car insurance excess paid out?

My dad's car was bumped at traffic lights and the car was damaged. The fault was of the other driver. He got contact and insurance details of the driver who bumped him, and my dad rang his own insurance company to look to arrange repair. He had to pay his excess £250 before repair was authorised. He paid the excess. As he does not have legal expenses cover his insurer has said they cannot help him recover the £250 from other insurance company/other driver. Can anyone give me some advice on how my dad should approach recovering this £250 excess?

Send a letter with a copy proof of payment to the third party insurer requesting reimbursement ( along with any other costs incurred which he has had to pay himself)0

Write to the other parties insurance company, simple as that....
If it happens again at any time, don't involve your own insurance company at all, apart from informing them of the incident.
Deal directly with the 3rd party and there is no messing about with reclaiming or anything.
They would organise everything, pay the garage direct for the repairs and that would be that.
Its happened to me twice and all I had to do was take the car to the garage and pick it up when it was ready. They even delivered a hire car to my door for me.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
