Need urgent hlep with Holiday Insurance with pre-existing condition

Options
Hi

I am hoping someone on here can help. My Father in law is an alcoholic and in a recovery period at present but he has suffered a bleed within the last year. My mother in law wants to take him to USA for a trip to help his recovery. When I am looking up insurance I cannot find any companies that will cover this. Basically alcoholism is an illness like any other, but does this mean they are never able to travel?

Can anyone suggest a company I can try or has any one had a family member with alcohol problems that went on a holiday?

Please we are desperate

Joanne

Presumably its his physical condition caused by his drinking you cannot insure (rather than him being an alcoholic)

See if any of the specialist insurers can offer cover.

Google travel insurance with pre existing conditions to find lots.

(Don't take him to USA without full medical cover for everything!!)

What is the evidence a trip to USA is so important for an alcoholic to "recover"?

Lets initially put the alcoholism is a medical condition aside.

Is your concern that the medical condition he suffers from (the "bleeds") will need medical attention whilst away irrespective of his actions? That he will have a relapse on drinking and this will cause a flare up of the condition? That he will get drunk and have some other form of unrelated accident/ injury? That they would want "evacuation" if he fell off the wagon even if there is no other symptoms?

Generally insurers will exclude accidents relating to excessive alcohol consumption but I cannot recall ever noticing alcoholism related conditions like cirrhosis being treated differently to any other medical problem, nor the cause of the cirrhosis being asked for.

I think you will find most insurers dont consider addictions as medical conditions and therefore it in itself doesnt need to be declared but any of the conditions he has as a consequence do and will go through the normal options of cover for an additional premium or accepting an exclusion.

Choosing a random broker that does online medical screening it was able to accept a couple of alcoholism related illnesses with no issues and never asked if it was alcohol related - neither did I spot anything in the terms that would cause a problem. That said it did come out with a very high premium
