Can damages be claimed

A friend of mine is presently trying to recover a total of £8k+ from Abbey and Lloyds TSB. In my view he stands a good chance of getting his money but the actual charges were a major contributor to the loss of his house (sold to cover his debts) and to him still owing a large sum to another lender. As he was "forced" into debt by the banks can he claim damages?
