Best stuff to paint wooden garden furniture?

Hi...we have some wooden table . chairs which have begun to lose the varnish...it seems to come off in strands...almost elastic bits...How and what is best to restore? I have tried the varnish type stuff but does peel every year!! thanks.

I only ever use teak oil on mine. having had the same problem as yourself on my previous set. But as you already have varnish , teak oil is out.

Even a good varnish should last longer than that.

I'm planning to remove the varnish...would teak oil be ok then?

If you remove the varnish then oil can be applied and if you use an oil based varnish then you can varnish over the oil. Prep is the most important part and probably the most time consuming.

Oil requires fairly frequent re-application depending on exposure.

I would use this which could stay looking good for 5 years.

As long as you you scrape or sand off the loose varnish (or blast it and any algae off with a pressure washer) it would be easier to paint with Cuprinol 'Shades' to give a solid colour rather than having to take every vestige of varnish off then re-apply deck oil or teak oil.

Assuming you fancy a solid colour rather than stained woodgrain, that is. I've done both and Shades is massively easier to apply, requires two coats at most, and a little goes a long way, so quite cheap And I think it looks quite classy (assuming you choose a sludgy greeny blue seaside colour like 'Seagrass, Willow, or Tyme...' The electric pink 'Sweet Sundae' looks too Barbie!)
