Ipod repair - is it worth it?

I have an Ipod classic which does get a lot of use.
It stopped working and apple said that I can either pay
£85 to get it fixed or £180 for a new one.
Any ideas on what is best? Or is there a different MP3 player that I could get? Any ideas?

There are plenty of MP3 players that can be had for under £85, buying from the Apple camp won't give you better sound quality because MP3 is a lossy format to start with.

I've kept my 2004-ish 4G iPod going with regular DIY. I've changed the battery a couple of times, and I replaced the hard drive with a little adapter and a CF card so it's now a 30GB solid-state device. I keep it going because it's the best match to the 2004-ish ICE-Link adapter I have in my car. I don't know how easy it is to work on the new Classics, but the older ones are easy. A colleague changed the display in his, and I know someone who's replaced the logic board in one.

a guy I work with fixes them and sells them on on ebay for a bit of a hobby...talking to him, duff disks are the most common cause of failures, and not difficult to change....try asking someone local (phone/pod repairers) for a quote :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Good idea. The problem with mine is that it doesn't connect and therefore the charge has gone.
