We're both over 25 now, but a few years ago we had the same problem. Found elephant to be best - and that was even when I was on a provisional licence.

Although I must say, £1300 seems pretty good to me! I know it's extortionate, but in year two it will probably drop to around £800-900, and then another good drop the next year.

Also, an advantage of elephant (and admiral) is that they offer the option of a 10 month bonus accelerator policy. So you get a 1 yr no claims bonus after just 10 months. After 4 years we'd got nearly 5 yrs worth of no claims ;) (and no you don't even get charged extra. the amount per month works out the same whether you take their 10 or 12 month policy).

    Good luck!

I can't believe it - how crazy is this whole insurance thing anyway?

I've got to insure the car for him because he has to bring it home - with Lancaster Insurance (classic car because it's a 1985 fiesta) with no NCB and as long as he's not on the insurance (can't drive it until he can afford the insurance) - they have quoted me for fully comprehensive and 12 full months £96.23!!!!! I don't even want to drive it but it will be parked on the road sometimes so has to be taxed and insured! Unfortunately, until he's 21 he cannot use this company!

Will keep searching, thanks for continued assistance.

To insure in father/mothers name may be "much cheaper" but there are several negatives to this :-

1- unless the young driver is declared as the main driver the insurance company may refuse to pay the claim once they investigate and find out who drives the car most.Their sleuths will check all the paperwork and who actually paid for the car and may even ask the neighbours who they have seen driving it.
2- pass plus discount is only available to a young driver insuring in his/her own name so does not apply for a policy in a parents name
3- the young driver does not earn his own NCD if the insurance is taken out by a parent and if you have 3 or 4 years NCD by the time you are 21 the premiums sink to a fraction of what you would pay with no NCD

I myself am 21 and have been insured on my parents insurance. To combat these negatives I would say the following:

    1. I haven't had this happen to me - An old lady went through a red light and crashed into me and there were no checks made on me, some of the details on the claim forms they sent us didn't even match those in the policy document! Of course you can't guarantee every company won't make checks but I think it's being overly paranoid personally.
    3. My insurance would have cost £1500/yr approx for the past 3 years had I been insured in my name. Instead it has cost nearer to £500 year - comparable to a heavy NCD. Now that I've hit 21 we've been able to get a more acceptable quote for approx £900 solely in my name.

Insuring in the parents name is the way to go if you ask me. I know lots of people who do it. Also if your worried about your own NCD make sure you get it protected! It's a small price to pay for the savings you'll make on your sons insurance.

Finally Direct Line are usually the cheapest insurers for young drivers.
