Payment Pending

I have had a buyer attempt to pay via Paypal 3 or 4 days ago and the item is still showing as 'the item is pending payment through Paypal'. I have emailed this person to tell them (incase they haven't noticed) but they've not yet come back to me.

Any idea what will be causing this ?

they could of paid by e-cheque, which can take up to 10 days to clear. I hate it when buyers pay like this. If you log into your paypal and look at the transaction it should give you an estimated clearence date.

    HTH :)

There are two possibilities, both of which happened to me recently and have been discussed on the dedicated ebay boards.

Firstly, ebay have a payment glitch or secondly buyer used an echeque.

It's easy to find out which it is by looking at the email notification you received from paypal when payment was made and by checking your paypal account. If it an echeque the paypal notification will be different and will warn you not to send goods until payment clears, this can be up to 10 working days! It also shows as uncleared in your paypal account and is not available for withdrawal.

If however it is the ebay glitch back again then the paypal notification would have been the usual one and the payment will show as cleared in your paypal account. If this is the case then you can manually mark it is paid if you wish on your ebay page and you should despatch the item A.S.A.P. in case the buyer starts wondering where their item is.

an e-cheque is like a bank tranfer through paypal. They get the money out of the persons bank and then pay it to you. The person has normally set up a direct debit to do this. Thats why it takes so long to clear. HTH :)

I echo what divadee says about the time it takes to clear. The last one I had took a full 10 working days to clear and as it was before Easter and the bank holidays don't count (of course) it was 3 weeks before I got a cleared payment!

Ahhh.. thanks for the advice! A few months ago I set my account up so as payments were taken directly from my bank account- I was not aware that this would cause a delay in payment. I thought it would just be zapped out of my account! In fact, I have never had a delay with receiving the goods so either I have had really trusting sellers or my payments are clearing more quickly!

Same here, my debit card details had expired so logged into ebay to update them. It then made me set up a direct debit, not knowing why? Now all my paypal payments take 10 days . I've tried to go back the way it was but can't figure it out. So now only use paypal when absolutely necessary- just send personal cheques. They clear quicker and there are no costs involved. Perhaps ebay should look at this rubbish e-cheque system, I'm sure not as many people are using it.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

I have added another card to my paypal account and can now choose better how to fund the purchase! I had to do this after paypal sent three e cheques as I had run out of funds! The echeques took an age to go through but the selllers were fine about it! At the mo, I too have a payment pending .....this time I am the seller, so will bide my time!
