There might have been a flea...

OH saw what might have been a flea this morning, we're not sure so keeping an eye out!
So our 2 monster cats are coming up to one year old and haven't been flea treated since we got them as kittens.
Where do I start looking? Been on these boards and there's so much advice and different brands of flea treatment etc! Do I wait till we've definitely seen fleas on them or shall we treat now to try and prevent anything just in case?

Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard

Treat now. You don't want the problem of fleas in your house. It's only a matter of time before they'll pick fleas up somewhere.

Oh the joys, my monsters aren't gonna like this!!!Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0 -
Or try dichotomous earth which has no chemicals so no reaction from your cats.
Might be best to buy this online as I'm not sure where else stocks it.0 -
You could speak to your vet about treatments - there are injections available which can break the fleas' lifecycle, and collars from the vet are likely to be more effective than OTC ones.
But definitely treat now, don't wait. Unless your cats are 100% indoor cats they are likely to come into contact with fleas so you do need to keep the treatments up to date. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0 -
Agree with TBagpuss - speak to the vet. We've tried cheaper treatments from supermarket/pet shop and they've made no difference at all. Vet stuff seems expensive, but is well worth it. They will also know what is working on cats in your area, and if the local fleas have built up resistance to any of the treatments.

To be really effective, you also need to treat the house as fleas don't live on the animal, merely use them as a Cafeteria  I use Indorex spray, which is really easy to use. You just need to be careful if you have any fish tanks (which we do) as it's deadly to them. It's much cheaper online than from the Vet.
