Travel insurance - holiday after renewal date/policy lapse

Got annual travel insurance last year which includes cancellation cover. Renewal date is 5th July. We booked a holiday a few weeks ago for after this date.
Decided not to renew, as usual, cheaper elsewhere. But if we had to cancel due to illness etc. hypothetically, would we be covered by old policy because the holiday was booked at the time that policy was valid, or new policy because that was in force when the cancellation needed to take place, or would there be no cover because the old policy lapsed and the new one came after the booking of the holiday?
Thanks
EDIT: Change in details of questions a bit. Just taken out new policy to start on 5 July. But with same insurer, as could get cashback etc and price much cheaper than renewing. Does this fact alter the above?

If you have to cancel you are covered by the policy in force on the date you cancel.0

The only issue comes about if you become sick "now" but only declared unfit to travel after the 5th July as this condition would be pre-existing to the new policy0
