informing on colleagues

I work with someone in a senior position to me who does not follow correct procedure in a pretty important element of the job.

I have told them to follow correct procedure but they refuse saying it will be alright and fobs me off.

Its been found out he is not following correct procedure. Many others knew about it also but no one reported it

Should I have grassed on my colleague?

If I had I would have been popular with management but may have gained a few enemies amongst those I work with.

Was I placed in a pretty impossible position? what sanctions do you think I could face.

If I simply deny I knew he was doing anything wrong and he never ignored procedure in my presence - would I be of the hook?

You just seem to bump from one work issue to another.

If it was an important process/procedure,

What cross checking was in place?
Why did it take so long to be uncovered?
Why are you telling other people how to do their job?

Everyone is responsible for health and safety issues - if you see someone breaking the law or putting themselves or others at risk then you should report it.

Use of that word generally tells you a lot about the person using it, and it's rarely positive.

When Edmund Burke wrote "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing", he did not go on to add "but if they speak up they are a grass"...

If they are in a senior position to you it's presumably not your job to be telling them how to do theirs, but at least you tried to. Presumably it's now someone senior to them who has found out they're not following a set procedure, making it their job to deal with it. If anyone spoke to me about it, this would be my stance. You mentioned it, they didn't listen or care. If you're asked why you didn't report this further up, well I would say I was considering it but then it was found out anyway.

Is this a safety issue or just an internal procedure?

To people from my background, the whole idea of a "grass" just makes no sense. The term implies that someone thinks that it's right that people can cheat, steal, or deceive, and that it is wrong that the authorities stop people doing it.

I'm from a background that says that stealing is always wrong, that you can't step on others to get ahead, that you have to work to make your life, and so on, so, to me, there is no such thing as a "grass", as the moral outlook that allows the definition simply makes no sense.

I get the impression that it's part of a suite of morals that I don't agree with, so people who'll talk about a "grass" will also denigrate a "swot", hate management, resent authority, and so on. These views seem awfully self-destructive to me.

    I'm a trader, yes. What's your point?

Most people in this job are the sort who'll go back to a shop if they find that they've been given too much change.

I get the impression from your question that honesty is seen as a weakness by you, but it'd genuinely not, it's one of the most important things that a person can have.
