They aren't mutually exclusive, the question for me is the ratio. I'm heavy on stocks for the long term, and comfortable with that whatever happens short term, but also focused on building a cash pool from dividends and savings now, with the intention of making good use of that money if a significant market adjustment does come in the short to medium term.
