Utter rubbish. The "probable toxic dose" is 5mg/kg of bodyweight. (by the way, I got that figure from a website that opposes fluoridation of water). That means that 2mg is toxic for someone who weighs half a kilo.

And to support toothsmith: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3841993/ That article states that black tea contains flouride at levels of 0.57 - 3.72 mg/l. Just a few cups of tea could get you in the mg range of fluoride consumption.

I grew up with fluoride added to the water.I brushed with fluoride toothpaste with NO problems. Neither have my sisters.I have one small filling done 20 years ago and I'm 53. I certainly had some sugar as a child too. But in my mind I would choose a glass of tap water with fluoride than fizzy drinks. Brushing properly, flossing and seeing a dentist regularly will do it for most people.

When I lived in Canada, all fluoride toothpastes carried a warning on them to seek medical advice if you swallowed more than a pea-sized amount.

Fluoride is toxic and the amount in a whole tube of toothpaste is enough to kill a small child whereas 2mg in one dose is enough to kill an adult male.

In areas of US where fluoride occurs naturally people often suffer brown mottling on their teeth.

I use salt toothpaste which is fluoride free as my (private) dentist says it's only useful for children.

My local water is spring water but if they wanted to adulterate that I would just switch to bottled non fluoridated water for cooking and tea.

I hate the very idea of something being added to all our water because it may be useful for some sections of the community. Give high fluoride toothpaste, supplements and water to the people who need it.

My dentist prescribed it a while back, I used it for a little while then did some research and decided against it. It was a few years ago, so don't remember the details, and as the dentist has not mentioned it again since I've not needed to revisit the information.
(my GP wrote a prescription when I asked him, by the way)

My GP has just refused to write one. They get an indication on the screen asking them not to provide it because they are a non-Dental expert.

    'But your Dentist can',

    'what if he is private?'

    'Oh no not then!'
  • I use Flouride free toothpaste, Flouride is NOT good for you and there is no proof that it actually benefits anyones teeth. People should read into the history of it a bit more and see that it is by product of industrial work

    Utter [STRIKE]bollo[/STRIKE] claptrap!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Why do people need this high fluoride toothpaste anyway? is it for people whos teeth are in a bad way and its a last ditch attempt to help them out?

Sort of, but hopefully not quite that bad! I have evidence of developing caries in one area and exposed root surfaces leading to sensitive teeth. That said since my last check up a few years ago my dentist thinks it is relatively stable.
High fluoride toothpaste is particularly used for preventing and controlling or arresting dental caries among high-risk individuals. It is not recommended for children. They are effective in arresting root caries lesions among those who have exposed root surfaces.

A private dentist can give a (private) prescription for Duraphat. I'm not sure why your GP suggested otherwise.

They are both specialists in their respective fields, a Vet can perform on a human, but a GP cannot perform on animals.
