My Dentist has sold me some Colgate Duraphat since they believe a high Fluoride toothpaste it might be helpful for me. She said "these are only available from Dentists". This was almost £7 for a small 51g tube.

It is even more from this chemist!

Anyone know of any better value high fluoride toothpaste?

Note high fluoride in this context is 5000ppm or 5mg per 1gram or 0.5%, this is around three and a half times the normal concentration. It would seem better value to stuff my mouth with four times as much cheap 1450 ppm toothpaste at from Aldi at 59p per 125ml that is less than one thirtieth the price per volume, or about a tenth per unit fluoride, but perhaps it doesn't work like that!

My NHS dentist just gives me a prescription for Duraphat 5000, 3 tubes on a single prescription. So that's £8.05 for 3 tubes, or £2.68 per tube. Can you not persuade yours to do the same?

Duraphat is the only high fluoride toothpaste and is a prescription only medicine ie if you are a nhs patient it can be prescribed to you on the nhs, if you are a private patient it can only be dispensed privately with a private charge from the chemist or dentist.

And GPs tend to get quite annoyed if you try asking them to provide the NHS prescription too!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

It does not work to stuff your mouth with 3 times more toothpaste of lower concentration as at any given moment in time there is only limited quantity of toothpaste in touch with your teeth. I love duraphat and one tube may last you for a few months if you don't dispense too much of it.
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

:rotfl:I think using 3 times the amount of toothpaste of a lower fluoride level may just bypass any financial saving unless you were to use super low priced stuff.

I think Tesco had the mouth wash on offer last week- no idea if the same is so now. My dentist suggested I use the mouth wash as my teeth have a lot of acid damage, but I agree, it is very expensive.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the deal is with the anti-fluoride campaigns? I hear loads about people not advocating it and even wanting it banned in some cases but I have no idea why, for someone like me it has made a marked difference using it, just sorry it's so expensive I can't use it as much as I'd like though it concerns me that maybe I should be rethinking my usage.

You could be right, but my usual habit was to use toothpaste with water thereby diluting it anyway. In fact to concentrate it even more I should be swallowing saliva to dry my mouth, then apply the toothpaste directly to the teeth to obtain the highest concentration of all. The length of time must be important as well.

If you read my post you will find the aldi toothpaste contains 30 times more toothpaste and 10 times more fluoride per £ than the Duraphat. Remember Duraphat is almost £7 for a small tube.

Indeed it is. And my dentist suggested that after using Duraphat you should spit (and not rinse), and avoid food & drink for the next 30 minutes. This ensures that a high concentration of fluoride remains around you teeth for as long as possible.

It has to be the mouthwash, long story but not toothpaste, for that I can only get away with Sensodyne Pronamel as everything else feels very very painful to use. (Like I say; long story!)

Among many other things, floride displaces iodine in the body

You can/should( in my opinion) check out some of these links.....

    https://startpage.com/do/search?q=why+is+fluoride+bad+for+you&lui=english_uk&l=english_uk&prf=e89857828a6777787e9ddfbc6b64f5ee

I, for one, am personally anti-floride, and now use a floride-free toothpaste.

Recently I was diagnosed with emphysema, and proscribed a bromide medication:eek: (this too displaces iodine, an essential element for your body and brain...just check out the chemistry!)...which I'm also not subscribing too, as at one point in my life, I had an overactive thyroid, and do not want to mess about with my bodies iodine needs!
