I have a large area that I am cultivating ready to sow some wild flower and seed/grass mix. lot of sites advise mixing seed with sand to ensure even distribution- is the type of sand important-what type is best- and any advise on best method of distribution.
area is 400m squared- needs t be 2.5 g per metre.
thanks

You need horticultural sand, not builders mix in concrete stuff
Horticultural sand has been washed and is free from salt, the other, and cheaper, sort is not salt free
Distribution, guess the old and well used method for centuries is just take a handful from the bucket and scatter it, from to the left & to the right
Another option is make holes in bottom of a free, or cheap, supermarket flower bucket, put mixture in, walk around and sow the seed as it trickles from the holes
Personally, just sow the the seed seed & scatter, as per the hymnWhen an eel bites your bum, that's a Moray0 -
As Farway has stated, you need horticultural sand. Look for 'silver sand' at your local garden centre. Approx £2 for 5kg.
Mark out an 1m x 1m square using bamboo canes, weigh out the right amound of seed/ sand mix and sow in the 1m square, firstly by 'throwing' (broadcasing) 1/2 of the seeds lengthways, then the other 1/2 widthways. this will give you an idea of the thickness you need to sow, so you can litterarly just broadcast sow the rest as Farway has suggested.0
