No Gas supply - 3 weeks for an engineer ??

Hi All,

Woke up today to find we have no Gas supply. Turned stopcock off and on again, nothing, not even a trickle.

Neighbours are all connected, no sign sign of a leak internally or externally. So, not an 'emergency' (oh really?)

Anyway, called my supplier (EDF, though don't think that's really all that relevant) who arranged an appointment with transco / Scotland Gas Networks (or whatever they are calling themselves these days)... for 8th of JULY

In these days quite how they consider having no gas supply to be a non-emergency is baffling.

Told them I'll be claming the £30/day compensation until it's sorted... but to be honest, I just want someone one today to fix it !

Combi boiler, so no heating/hot water. Gas cooker & over, so can't cook any food. No microwave either.

Anyone, any thoughts ?

Cheers,
Chris.

Ring up and say you think you smelt gas? Won't take 3 weeks to get someone out then!

Is it a digital gas meter? Maybe the battery has died or it's shut itself off because it's been knocked (some sort of anti-tamper feature?)

£600 for 20 days in high summer to be without gas?

Where do I sign up? That'll pay for both our gas & electricity for the whole year

Actually, one of the £30's would pay almost totally for a microwave. I agree it's a long wait, but I think I'd happily manage without in high summer and buy a microwave or one of these.... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fine-Elements-Electrical-Double-Plate/dp/B0057JBK26/ref=sr_1_1/275-9510407-4492511?ie=UTF8&qid=1403022385&sr=8-1&keywords=double+electric+hot+plate

PS Perhaps I should come clean. I lived without hot water for TWO YEARS (I was about to have the house done up and it took longer than I expected, which is why I didn't just replace the boiler). One can have a perfectly adequate 'shower' using 6 kettles and two buckets of diluted boiling water :D
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Hang on ,are you saying that there is no gas coming into the house?

Is the main tap at the meter turned on?

/if you have an appliance such as cooker or fire, can you check if there is gas coming out of it?

If not, ring 0800111999 and report "no gas" situation.

Do you have a credit or prepayment meter?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

call 0800 111999 and report no gas situation, they will come out today. However if faulty meter, where the valves have shut down and failed it would be 6 working days

    Hi All,

    Thanks for the replies.

Credit meter, I'd rather use a camping stove than prepayment! Mains tap was on, tried the whole off/on thing, no gas coming out of cooker or into boiler.

Apparently, Transco/SGN won't deal with a 'no gas' situation, and refer you to your supplier. I, possibly stupidly, told them there was definitely no leak and no smell of gas.

As you allude to, being the height of summer... if we had a microwave, I'd have left them to it... I probably would have went out and bought one had I thought about it... but I just wanted it sorted.

Anyways, after going off on a rant with them... I told them I lived with an 'elderly and vulnerable relative', and suddenly I was a priority, and someone was out within in 3 hours. :j

Faulty regulator on the meter. It was one of the new OnStream smart meters (which hasn't been Smart since the day it was installed - it doesn't like stone walls), so that piece of **** is gone now.

Anyways, all sorted... and no compensation due :undecided oh well.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

Scotia Gas Networks have misinformed you. They do have a duty to attend no gas situations where it appears that the no gas situation is as a result of network failure. If on further investigation the network is ok but the meter or regulator are defective, the SGN Engineer may be able to rectify/exchange provided the correct contractual arrangements are in place with your supplier. This appears to have happened in your case..happy days.
